Presentation title: Novel Bainitic Steels for Hot Rolled Applications

Radhakanta Rana is a Principal Researcher at Tata Steel R&D in IJmuiden, The Netherlands. He has worked in various countries (USA, Germany, Netherlands and India) and has a professional experience of about 16 years following his PhD. Dr. Rana’s current research areas encompass the development of innovative hot- and cold-formable steels for applications in automotive and lifting & excavating sectors, with an “end-to-end approach”, and the effects of high recycled contents on steel properties. In his research, he puts a particular focus on the understanding of the chemistry-processing-structure-property paradigm. Leading cross-functional teams, he has developed a number of innovative sheet steel product concepts. Dr. Rana has published some of his work on various 3rd generation advanced high strength steels, hot press formed steels, low density steels, high modulus steels, precipitation hardening steels and research techniques in over 80 papers in journals & conferences and in 1 book chapter, and also filed for many patents. In addition, Dr. Rana has also published 2 books on modern and emerging iron alloys and edited 3 special issues in materials journals.

Dr. Rana renders his service to the materials profession in various capacities such as journal Editor, Editorial Board Member, Key Reader, Expert/Scientific Committee Member, Advisory Board Member, Conference Topic Coordinator, Conference Session Chair etc. He has also brought together a number of European consortia involving universities, steel producers and automakers for collaborative research at the interfaces of science, manufacturing and applications to further the impact of steel innovations at larger scale.

Dr. Rana has received a number of TATA Group internal as well as external recognitions, including the InnoVista Awards (four times at company and regional levels), the Fellowship of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) and Brimacombe Medalist Award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) to name a few.
