Presentation title: Design of Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistant High Strength Steels

Masoud Moshtaghi studied Materials Engineering and graduated from Ibaraki University, Japan. His primary research topics include fatigue, welding, steel design, design & analysis of steel structures and hydrogen embrittlement in advanced steels and alloys.

He started his research career at SIEMENS GmbH, Germany in 2012. He pursued a research career at Ibaraki University, Japan and worked at the Quantum Beam Research Center, Ibaraki University affiliated with the Japan Proton Acceleration Research Center (J-PARC). His main focus was studying the mechanics of materials and their mechanical performance in different loading regimes, e.g. cyclic, monotonic, axial, triaxial, etc. On top of that, the environmental effects on the mechanical performances of steels and alloys were studied with the main focus on hydrogen embrittlement. He developed several new approaches to the prediction of fatigue and monotonic tensile failures based on neutron/X-ray diffraction and entropy generation concepts and the development of a new series of alloys such as advanced high-strength steels for hydrogen applications with collaboration with top researchers and professors in fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement, steel design and quantum beams. He also recently introduced a new concept for hydrogen embrittlement prediction of alloys under the fatigue loading condition, which is now labelled as Hydrogen-Enhanced ENTropy (HEENT). During his academic career, he also led several projects related to hydrogen embrittlement and fatigue of advanced high-strength steels and alloys in Montanuniversitaet Leoben, Austria from 2021 – 2023. He was recently appointed as a new professor of steel structures and head of the Steel Structures Laboratory, LUT University, Finland, continuing the research work and leading the research projects on fatigue, welding, steel design, design & analysis of steel structures and hydrogen embrittlement in advanced steels and alloys. LUT Laboratory of Steel Structures has been a trailblazer in the field of design and strength analysis of steel and alloys in different combinations of loading regimes, structural design, welding joints and novel manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing in Finland since 1974.

Masoud Moshtaghi has published over 60 papers in journals and conference proceedings and is a member of editorial boards and chair/organizer in different international scientific journals and conferences.
