Presentation Title: Age Hardening of Maraging Steels – Physically-based Modelling vs Artificial Neural Networks

Dr Zhanli Guo received his BEng and MEng in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, and PhD from Queens University Belfast, UK.  He is the Scientific Director of Sente Software Ltd., focusing on developing computer software JMatPro®, which models materials properties and behaviour critical for alloy design and processing.  He has written and co-written more than 100 technical papers, including over 40 journal publications, and one book on maraging steels.  He also holds a visiting professor position at University of Surrey, UK.

JMatPro® has been the focus of my (research) life over the past 20 years.  Its development started in 1999 to extend the use of the so-called CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach to develop the capability of predicting a wide range of physical and mechanical properties for multicomponent industrial alloys.  Dr Guo is the Scientific Director of the company, looking after the scientific and technical development of JMatPro® and its Application Programming Interface (API) and Material Property Optimiser (MPO), which now has over 900 users in around 50 countries worldwide.

Materials property data have been an integral part of processing simulation ever since such simulations were made possible.  The ability of JMatPro® to calculate most, if not all, of the material properties essential for processing simulation brings us one-step closer towards truly virtual simulation of metal processing.  Dr Guo has been actively promoting the integration of materials modelling into processing simulation since 2006, which very much coincides with the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach coined later in around 2008.
