Presentation Title: Volume expansion decarburization kinetics of a Fe-1wt%.C liquid steel by varying Ar-CO2 ratio

Professor Yongsug Chung received his bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Yonsei University in 1990, and his MS and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University  in 1995 and 1999, respectively. After receiving his doctorate, he worked as a research professor at the University of Toronto in Canada for two years and then worked for 7 years as a new steel product development manager at Dongbu Steel (now KG Steel) in Korea.

Since 2009, he has been working as an assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor at TU Korea. He also served as dean of students from 2021 to 2022.

Professor Chung's field of interest includes high-temperature interfacial phenomena such as molten steel and slag, molten steel and refractory materials, and slag and refractory materials. He conducts research on corrosion and erosion of refractory materials such as MgO-C and Al2O3 and the removal of non-metallic inclusions during the steelmaking process. He has conducted a number of studies to solve the problems of refractory materials and steelmaking slags in Korean Steel industries such as POSCO, Hyundai Steel, and Dongkuk Steel. Recently, he is conducting research on a bottom blowing  technology related to a new low carbon electric arc furnace process.  In addition, he is a member of KIMM in Korea and TMS in the US, participates in an international advisory for ISIJ  in Japan and serves as the Korean chairman of the Korea-China joint symposium on steel science and technology since 2021.
